Thermoplastic Elastomer, also known as TPE, is sometimes considered Thermoplastic Rubber, or TPR. TPE is a combination of a plastic and rubber. TPE is a durable compound and can handle temperature extremes well. These characteristics allow TPE to be used in harsh environments.
TPE is regularly used for applications that experience a good amount of flexing without being damaged or deformed. It is also good where durability is needed and temperature extremes may be encountered – it’s both flexible and strong in tough conditions. A common use for TPE is with a portable cordset, including SEOW, SEO and SJEOW cables. Due to the high amount of flexing that may be needed, or wide range of temperatures encountered, TPE cables are used in industrial applications, both indoor and outdoor. They are used for machines, large appliances, motors, mining, power and lighting due to the amount of flexing it may encounter. In a more robust application, TPE cable is often used on cranes because they are able to withstand mechanical loads.
TPE can be used as either an insulation or jacket material. The table below provides general guidelines for TPE in various environments.
