Why is Compression Set a Critical Factor When Choosing TPE, TPR, or TPV for Sealing Applications?

Latest company news about Why is Compression Set a Critical Factor When Choosing TPE, TPR, or TPV for Sealing Applications?

**Compression set** is a material property that measures the degree to which a material permanently deforms after being subjected to a continuous compressive force over a period of time, usually at an elevated temperature. For sealing applications—where **TPE**, **TPR**, or **TPV** are used for gaskets, O-rings, and weatherseals—a low compression set value is absolutely critical. If the material suffers a high compression set, the seal will fail over time as the material loses its ability to exert pressure and recover its original shape, leading to leaks and component failure.

In comparing the three materials, **TPR** generally exhibits the highest (worst) compression set, making it less suitable for long-term, static sealing applications. Standard **TPE** offers moderate improvement. However, **TPV** consistently provides the lowest (best) compression set performance across a wide range of temperatures. This superior performance is a direct result of the dynamic cross-linking in TPV, which mimics the permanent elasticity of thermoset rubber. For demanding, long-life sealing applications in automotive or industrial machinery, TPV is the preferred choice because its excellent compression set ensures the seal maintains its integrity and sealing force over the product's entire lifespan, providing unmatched reliability and durability.
